It was hot.  It was the monsoon. There was barely a tourist to be seen.  But I was still incredibly excited to make my first trip to India, and it did not disappoint - diverse cultures, bustling markets, a kaleidoscope of colours and an opportunity to see artisanal brilliance first hand. And even camels!

Block-print behind the scenes

Block-print has been an INSIDE staple ever since we set up, but I have never seen it being made before.  This proved to be one of the highlights of my trip and I would strongly recommend it if you get the chance.

Established block-printers usually have a library of carved wooden (or brass) blocks, with hundreds of different patterns and designs, all of which can be used with different colour schemes, hence the extraordinary variety of block-print available:

Watching artisans delicately press these intricate wooden blocks onto fabrics was a true delight.

The artisan was working on some block-printed palm tree (one of our best-selling motifs) placemats. To start, he printed the border.

Next, he printed the outline of the palm tree. Note that he’s doing it by eye - there’s a lot of skill to this, but it also accounts for the minor variations which are part of the charm of this fabric.

Thirdly, he added colour to the floral part of the palm tree (the inflorescence), by dipping a small matching block into a magenta-toned pigment.

Then, he pressed the dominant colours of the palm tree (here, the leaves and the trunk).

Last but not least, he pressed a piece of cloth on the print, to soak up any excess dye.

With impressive speed and accuracy, he repeated the process… and voila!

I found the patience and precision of these artisans to be quite awe-inspiring. We are proud and grateful to be a part of this unique block-printing tradition, to spread its beauty in Hong Kong and Singapore, and to witness its magic in action.

An abundance of colour and joy

From the bustling streets of Delhi to the vivid colours of Rajasthan, we were immersed in a kaleidoscope of hues. The vibrant markets, filled with textiles and handicrafts, were a true feast for our senses. Every corner was a living canvas!
