Kantha is a type of quilt, made without padding, but by sewing together layers of cloth, usually with a running stitch.   It is a centuries-old tradition, originating in Bengal, and was a way to recycle old cloth, typically saris, but also as a form of artistic expression, with each piece reflecting the skill and taste (or not!) of its maker.

Our vintage kanthas have been chosen for the exceptional quality of the handiwork, the fine stitching and the beautiful faded colours and patterns.   Each piece is handmade and absolutely unique, and the appearance is different on each side.  There are obvious areas where another piece of fabric has been patchworked in, but this is part of the charm.   We're calling this one 'Rasberry' because it's so....rasberry.

By design, these are hardwearing pieces of textile, although they generally feel quite soft.  They could be used as a quilt, throw, or a table covering, or even as a rug in a low traffic area, such as a bedroom.

They can be washed, and one would imagine that over the course of their lifetime, each piece of fabric has been washed dozens of times before becoming part of the kantha.  Nonetheless, we would avoid the use of bleach, harsh detergents and hot water.
